“I love your home, it’s so cozy.”
Over the years, I’ve heard some variation of this sentence from several visitors. And I love they get a sense of coziness because for me that is what I love about my home.
Simply, I love being cozy in my home!
Do you remember Glinda telling Dorothy the way to return to Kansas? Simply click her heels and think of home. And how many times as a kid did you try that particular trick when at a birthday party gone bad or when great-aunt Louise served her “famous” pot roast for Sunday lunch?
Now I don’t have a magical pair of sparkly shoes to get me where I want to be, but I wholeheartedly agree that there’s no place quite like home.
What does it take to make a space home?
Ask ten different people and you will get ten different answers. That’s the beauty of home, there are many elements that create it. However, one thing would be common throughout the answers: home is something more than four walls.
But where does design fit into all this speculation about what makes a home? It’s the reason that for someone the clean lines of contemporary style create a sense of peace. It’s the reason why finally finding the perfect leather chair with an ottoman to enjoy a classic book and a two-fingers of whiskey is so satisfying. It’s the reason why displaying the painting from your grandmother alongside her favorite fresh flowers brings a smile to your face every time you pass them.
Design pulls all the disparate elements together so you walk into your space and say, “There’s no place like home.”
My favorite part of design is getting to help people find home, whether that’s in a familiar or a new space.
Do I love the perfect magazine pictures highlighting bold new trends? Yes! They’re beautiful! Do I believe that every home should be styled in that way? No.
A comfortable and beautiful home should be accessible to everyone, and my hope is to change people’s preconceived notions of the role of interior design and help them see the possibilities in their individual spaces.
